YES case study: CWF funded garden project changing young people’s lives

The Charlie Watkins Foundation proudly supports the Youth Enquiry Service (YES), which assists vulnerable young people in Essex. Part of our funding is used to host GoGreen, a gardening project based in Colchester helping young people with mental health challenges.

The project connects young people with nature and involves them nurturing the flourishing community garden. It helps young people engage with others, breaking social isolation, developing confidence, and learning new skills, both practical and social.

We’re incredibly happy to have received the below case study from YES, showing the difference GoGreen is making.

A young person who started GoGreen in 2021 was facing mental health challenges – he was depressed and addicted to video games. Also, he was experiencing a stressful period at home due to a family break-up.

This year has seen him really engage with YES’ services, attending GoGreen more regularly and receiving counselling. His confidence has gone through the roof – he looks physically healthier and reports that his mood and wellbeing has improved.

He has developed leadership skills and has been a driving force behind the Dungeons and Dragons group that has been set up. He has shown great patience with explaining the rather complicated rules of the games and proved himself to be a great teacher.

The progress of this young person over the last year shows the benefit of the GoGreen project, providing support over a longer period of time. This has been done by consistent gentle engagement. Over time, he has responded more and more until we have reached a point where he volunteers to help others and is ready to become an ambassador for GoGreen.

Thank you to YES and their volunteers for their life-changing work within the GoGreen project. The Charlie Watkins Foundation provides financial support to organisations like YES. To help us continue to support these initiatives, please donate here
